Challenge: Restricted Access and Working Along Active Railway Tracks

GeoEnviro Solutions Ltd (GES) was tasked with performing a detailed ground investigation along the railway embankment southbound from Malvern Link Railway Station. Initially, the project scope involved drilling five window sample boreholes up to 10 meters below ground level (mbgl) or until refusal and conducting five dynamic probes to 12 mbgl, all over five weekday night shifts. Due to unforeseen conditions, this was adapted to two window sample boreholes and three dynamic probes, maintaining the same rigorous quality and safety standards.

Working within an active railway environment introduced specific challenges:

Ground Investigation at Malvern Rail Link
  • Night Work Access: Given that work had to be performed at night, adhering to railway safety standards while managing restricted access and worksite visibility was essential.
  • Equipment Transport and Track Mobility: Equipment had to be safely transported on track trollies over distances of 0.6 to 1.2 km each night. This demanded a systematic approach to loading and unloading at each location, ensuring all items were accounted for and moved securely.

  • Geotechnical Testing in a Rail Environment: Conducting accurate and effective in-situ geotechnical testing in an environment that required minimal disruption to railway operations was another crucial aspect.

Solution: Methodical Nighttime Ground Investigation with Specialized Equipment

Under the supervision of a client-supplied controller of site safety and a certified GES engineer, the team adapted to the modified scope, efficiently and safely completing the site investigation. The night-shift setting demanded heightened attention to both logistical and operational challenges. Each phase of the work required coordination and seamless execution to adhere to tight timelines while maintaining quality and safety. Our team’s experience and meticulous planning were critical in navigating the complex site conditions.

  • Nightly Equipment Push: Using Light Modular Sampling Rigs (LMSR), the team advanced exploratory holes along the railway track. Locations were marked using chainage, mileage, and yards, enabling precise tracking and data collection.
  • Controlled Transport with Track Trollies: Each night, the team carefully loaded and unloaded railway track trollies, allowing safe and efficient equipment transport. The setup was double-checked nightly to ensure safety at every step.
  • Marking and Retrospective GPS Surveying: Completed exploratory holes were clearly marked for retrospective GPS surveying, ensuring accurate location data for analysis and future reference.
  • Lab Testing and Comprehensive Reporting: Geotechnical samples were sent to a UKAS-accredited lab, and a thorough factual report was generated to provide essential data for ongoing railway infrastructure development.

Result: Successful Geotechnical Site Investigation with Minimal Disruption

Through efficient planning and a commitment to safety, the investigation resulted in several key outcomes:

  • Efficient Testing and Data Collection: Despite the complexities of night work and restricted track access, the team effectively completed thorough in-situ testing. This data was instrumental in providing insights into the subsurface conditions, aiding future infrastructure upgrades and maintenance planning for the railway. The geotechnical findings equipped stakeholders with reliable data for informed decision-making.
  • Safe and Compliant Operations: All work adhered strictly to railway safety protocols, ensuring operations continued without disruption to the rail service.
