Challenge: Restricted Access and Compliance with National Grid Standards
GeoEnviro Solutions Ltd in collaboration with our sister company Borehole Solutions Ltd was tasked with conducting a site investigation at a National Grid high voltage substation. The project was part of the installation of an HDD cable line from the Bramley substation to a nearby battery storage facility. This high-stakes project presented unique challenges due to the nature of working within a high voltage environment and strict compliance with National Grid standards.

The primary challenges included:

  • Restricted Access: The borehole locations within the substation presented height limitations and required careful navigation using track mats.
  • Geotechnical Testing in a Sensitive Environment: Conducting in-situ geotechnical testing while maintaining safety and adherence to National Grid’s strict guidelines.
  • National Grid Compliance: All works had to meet the requirements set out in National Grid’s AMBP_400 document, under the supervision of qualified personnel with NSI1 and NSI8 certifications.

Given the sensitivity and operational complexity of high voltage substations, a thorough and safe site investigation was crucial.

Solution: Comprehensive Geotechnical Testing and Safe Borehole Drilling
GeoEnviro Solutions Ltd, alongside Borehole Solutions Ltd, executed a detailed site investigation to meet the project’s needs while ensuring safety and compliance with National Grid’s regulations. Key aspects of the project included:

  • Dynamic Sampler Boreholes: Two dynamic samplers with rotary follow-on boreholes were advanced to a depth of 15 meters below ground level (mbgl), allowing for a thorough investigation of the subsurface conditions.
  • In-Situ Geotechnical Testing: Standard Penetration Tests (SPTs) were conducted at depths of 5.00 mbgl, 10.00 mbgl, and at the base, providing critical data on soil conditions and load-bearing capacity.
  • Soil Sample Collection: Samples were taken at various depths for laboratory testing to assess the site’s geotechnical properties further.
  • XYZ Coordinate Logging: Borehole locations were precisely logged using GPS rovers to ensure accurate site mapping and record-keeping.
  • Adherence to National Grid Standards: All work was conducted according to National Grid’s AMBP_400 guidelines, under the supervision of qualified professionals certified with NSI1 and NSI8.
  • Track Mat and Restricted Access Solutions: The use of track mats allowed the team to overcome restricted access, ensuring that equipment could be safely transported to the borehole locations.

This methodical approach ensured both safety and efficiency in a challenging high voltage environment.

Result: Safe and Compliant Geotechnical Investigation for National Grid Project
The site investigation at the National Grid substation led to several key outcomes:

  • Successful Geotechnical Testing: The in-situ geotechnical testing provided valuable data for the HDD cable installation, including information on soil composition and load-bearing capacity.
  • Full Compliance with National Grid Standards: The project adhered to all required safety and procedural guidelines, with all staff certified to work in high voltage environments.
  • Accurate Borehole and Site Data: Precise logging and GPS mapping of borehole locations ensured that all data was accurately captured and recorded for future reference.

With proven experience and a commitment to high standards, our team at GeoEnviro Solutions Ltd and Borehole Solutions Ltd collaborated to deliver a safe, efficient, and compliant site investigation, enabling the National Grid project to progress with confidence.
