Challenge: Inefficient Gas Boilers and the Need for Renewable Energy

Morecambe Bay Academy faced a major heating issue when their ageing and inefficient gas boilers failed completely. The school was relying on a temporary boiler system but sought a long-term, sustainable solution. Wanting to move away from gas as their primary heating source, the Academy approached GeoEnviro Solutions Ltd to develop a more efficient and environmentally friendly heating system. Their goal was to integrate as much renewable technology as possible into the new system to future-proof their energy needs.

The primary challenges included:

  • Complete Boiler Failure: The old gas boilers had become unusable and the temporary solution was not viable in the long term.
  • Requirement for Renewable Technology: The Academy was committed to reducing its reliance on fossil fuels and wanted a heating system that utilized renewable energy, with a focus on geothermal solutions
  • New Heating Infrastructure: A completely new heating system was required, including a dedicated plant room and modern heat distribution setup to serve the school for many years.

A robust solution that incorporated geothermal energy and heat pumps was essential to meet the Academy’s renewable energy goals and provide a long-lasting heating system.

Solution: Installation of Ground Source Heat Pumps and Geothermal Boreholes

GeoEnviro Solutions Ltd implemented a cutting-edge renewable energy solution for Morecambe Bay Academy, focused on geothermal energy and sustainable heating technology. Key components of the project included:

  • 360kW Ground Source Heat Pump System: The school’s heating system was replaced with three Carrier 220kW ground source heat pumps, designed to deliver low-temperature heating efficiently.
  • Geothermal Boreholes Installation: A network of 72 geothermal boreholes, each 120 meters deep, was drilled beneath the school’s playing fields. These boreholes harness geothermal energy, providing a sustainable and constant energy source for the heat pumps.
  • Modern Low-Temperature Heating System: The heat pumps were integrated with a new low-temperature heating system, utilizing modern column radiators that fit the aesthetic of the school’s original radiators.
  • Bespoke Building Management System (BMS): GeoEnviro Solutions designed a custom control system that manages the heating and hot water requirements across the entire Academy, ensuring maximum energy efficiency.
  • Site Remediation: Once the boreholes were installed, the playing fields were fully restored and made available for use again, minimizing disruption to the school’s operations.

This geothermal heating system offers an energy-efficient, low-carbon solution that aligns with the Academy’s commitment to sustainability and renewable energy.

Result: Sustainable Heating System and Significant Carbon Reduction

The installation of the ground source heat pump system at Morecambe Bay Academy resulted in several key benefits:

Low-Temperature Heating System: The school now has a state-of-the-art heating and hot water system powered by renewable energy, replacing their outdated and inefficient gas boiler system.

Carbon Emissions Reduction: By switching to ground source heat pumps powered by renewable energy, the Academy will save an estimated 101,630 kg of carbon emissions per year, significantly reducing its environmental footprint.

Future-Proof Heating Infrastructure: The new system is designed to serve the Academy’s heating needs for many years, providing a long-term renewable energy solution.

Minimal Disruption and Full Site Restoration: The playing fields were fully restored after the boreholes were installed, ensuring that the school’s facilities could be used as normal.

This project highlights GeoEnviro Solutions Ltd’s expertise in geothermal energy and heat pump technology, delivering sustainable and cost-effective heating solutions for commercial properties.
